Me as the Joker and my hamster Yuffie.
The following is a message directed specifically at @thornlordslady on Twitter. Obviously too long for Twitter, I decided to post my theories here to share with her.
@thornlordslady I think it’d be important for any young man to grow up understanding the historical divide between men and women, and that while great leaps have been made, a divide still exists.
Many men might feel they get “the short end of the stick” a lot of times, as efforts are made to ensure women’s equality. A survey was done of Commerce students some years ago that indicated that just as many men thought they would be discriminated against in getting a job as women did. Is this equality? No. Is this evidence that men are now becoming oppressed? I don’t believe so.
Your husband retweeted a great article, and I think a quotation stands true for this situation as well: “…privilege always lies with the majority. They’re so used to being catered to that they see the lack of catering as an imbalance.”
Boy power is understanding that you don’t get the world handed to you on a silver platter. Boy power is recognizing and understanding the trials of women, and the oppression they have felt due to men. Boy power is recognizing that the problems of the past are not his fault, and he is not to blame.
It’s understanding that he is not under attack as a gender because it’s harder for him to get a job, or because there are women’s groups, or because “girl power” is a thing, but not “boy power.” It’s looking at the world through the right set of lenses and seeing that things are changing, things are imperfect, but they’re not out to destroy him.
Empowering as a person becomes the icing on the cake in this lesson, I think.
I don’t know if this fits your situation, but it’s what I would hope to teach my son(s?) some day. That, and don’t be an asshole. :^p

Another in my series of wannabe ocremixes … some day. This one is a take on the Final Fantasy VI song Edgar and Mash.
Edgar and Mash plays as a sort of national anthem for the kingdom of Figaro. It reflects the power and strength of the nation, creating images of glory and pride.
Half way through the game, the world is decimated. Figaro Castle is lost beneath the desert’s sands and the people are under the rule of The Empire. With this in mind, I turned the “anthem” into a lullaby. I’m still playing around with the singing of it, but I have a specific image in mind. A father sings this lullaby to his dead child, his child having died in the chaos.
The instrumentation at the beginning is from Seline, a music-making program for iPad. Playing around with that as well.
just got teary-eyed from a cartoon.
This makes me thankful that my boyfriend’s career gives health benefits to same-sex partners… but many don’t. I wish people could realize the effects inequality has.
This is so horrible :( Closed mindedness is an epidemic. It needs to be cured.
